Canadian Parents for French – Vancouver North Chapter

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is a non-profit parent volunteer organization that supports French language learning in Canada. The goal of the Vancouver North chapter of CPF is to improve your child's experience with learning French through the following activities:

Advocating for quality French programs with the Vancouver School Board (VSB) and the provincial government, Enriching school programs by supporting extracurricular activities that make French relevant outside the classroom, and Informing you about local events, resources of interest, and ways to help support your child.

For example, during the 2009/10 school year the Vancouver North Chapter:

  • Helped parents develop a response to the closure pre-notification of Henry Hudson Elementary, a dual-track school in our chapter.
  • Lobbied for reinstatement of the Annual Facilities Grant.
  • Wrote an editorial to the Vancouver Sun explaining why French Immersion programs should not be cut despite the budget crisis.
  • Participated in the Modern Language Advisory Committee meetings of the VSB.
  • Provided advice to parents on 2010/11 FI K waitlist and developed a trial online survey of parents on FI K waitlist. We hope to collaborate with the VSB on distributing the survey this year.
  • Provided over 100 discounted Children's Festival tickets to parents.
  • Established a $300 chapter grant program, with grants available to all chapter schools.
  • Helped Tennyson and General Gordon successfully apply for Socio-cultural grants for in-school performances.
  • Distributed 10 free Amuse-toi kits to members with preschool aged children ($60 value).
  • Supported the Concours d'art Oratoire, a province-wide speaking contest.
  • Developed information sheets on early French Immersion registration, tips for students starting early French Immersion, fostering literacy at home, Vancouver area summer French camps, fun things to do in French over the summer, and learning materials recommended by Vancouver French Immersion teachers.
  • Sponsored two parent information sessions by Sallie Boschung, French Early Literacy Specialist.
  • Maintained a list of local French-language resources for parents.
  • Informed members of local events and resources via newletters and e-mails

If you support our efforts to improve French-language learning in Vancouver, please consider becoming a member. A family membership is only $25, and 90% of this returns to the Vancouver North chapter if you join before October 31, 2010. You can register by mail or on-line.

The most important reason to join CPF is that your membership gives CPF a more powerful voice to advocate for quality French language education. French Immersion is a program of choice, so it is up to parents/guardians to speak up and keep the program strong. CPF Vancouver North advocates locally but with a national profile, giving us a unique opportunity to speak effectively on your children’s behalf.

In addition, with your membership you will receive discounts at various vendors of French language materials, access to discounted tickets for a bilingual Children's Festival performance, and access to camps and events such as the BC Family French Camp and Recontre Française that allow your child to connect with other French language students in the area.

Please see the national, provincial, and chapter websites to learn more.
