Vancouver, BC: - Canadian Parents for French-BC & Yukon is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Rothon to the position of Executive Director.

“Robert brings to CPF a skill set that will complement the important work we do in promoting French Second Language education,” said Debra Pool, president of the advocacy group. “With his passion for bilingualism, perfect fluency in both French and English, and impeccable writing skills, Robert will be a valuable addition to our organization.”

Robert’s strong background in strategic planning, media relations, project management and non-profit advocacy will provide leadership to CPF as it continues to advocate for French second language learning opportunities for students across BC and the Yukon. In addition to consultancy work with not-for-profits with a focus on grant writing, his professional background includes radio broadcasting with Radio-Canada, and family literacy research with Éducacentre College of Vancouver, where he was also Head of Adult Education and Training.

“I am excited about the incredible opportunities bilingual youth are offered today.  To be able to work with students, parents, teachers, governments and our many partners to help students achieve their bilingual dreams by extending these opportunities is both an honour and a challenge,” stated Rothon.

There are almost 290,000 students enrolled in French immersion, intensive French or French as a subject in BC and the Yukon. Canadian Parents for French-BC & Yukon advocates on their behalf through a variety of initiatives: providing opportunities for youth to use their French language skills outside the classroom; helping parents who don’t speak French support their children; and working with school districts and partner organizations to ensure programs remain accessible and well supported.

Nancy Taylor, who has filled the position on an interim basis since January 2008, will help transition Mr. Rothon into his new position beginning October 14, 2008.  “The CPF- BC & Yukon Board of Directors is indebted to Nancy for serving as Executive Director during this time of transition. We have appreciated the leadership and initiative she has brought to CPF,” said Pool.

Canadian Parents for French is the national non-profit network of volunteers dedicated to the creation and promotion of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians.  The BC & Yukon branch is by far the largest in Canada with over 8,700 members.
