Released June 3, 2008 Vancouver- Moscrop Secondary graduating student Livia Poljak won one of five grand prizes of a $20,000 scholarship to the University of Ottawa at the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) National French public speaking competition, the Concours d’art oratoire 2008, held in Ottawa on Saturday, May 31, 2008. Her topic? “The benevolent dictator, all about my own desire to be a teacher and to have complete control of an entire class,” she laughs. She competed in the late French immersion category. Other BC winners included Aera Jung from Argyle Secondary (3rd place core French) and Genevieve Coholan-Lachance (2nd place early French immersion) from Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver. They each won a $2,000 entrance scholarship to the University of Ottawa. The 2008 competition involved 36 grade 12 students who were eligible to compete as finalists in the national competition. Each finalist delivered the speech that won them first prize at the school, regional, and/or provincial/territorial levels. The national competition has five language categories: core French (basic), core extended, early French immersion, late French immersion, and Francophone. In addition to the five grand prizes of a 20,000 scholarship, the University of Ottawa also awarded each of the finalists who competed, but who did not win the grand prize, with a $2,000 entrance scholarship.
