Olympic Hockey Day and Night In Canada Print E-mail

Sunday was a big day for the Canadian Olympic hockey team as they faced their rivals in their last preliminary round: The USA. The winner of this game was to go straight to the quarterfinals, while the loser would have to win an extra qualifying game on Tuesday to make it to the quarterfinals against the powerful Russian team.

I didn't really like hockey when I was little. I would always complain that some favourite TV show was cancelled because of a hockey game. Then one day I decided to watch a hockey game because there was nothing else to watch on TV. I was hooked after that. I love the speed of the game, the intensity of the players and the passion of the fans (mostly Canadian I would say).

I decided to go to Silvercity Riverport cinemas because they broadcast the games on a big screen. The game was broadcast in two screening rooms, both of them full of people. Many wore a Canadian team jersey and some even brought a big Canadian flag with them. When Canada scored a goal, the whole room would go crazy and people would high five their neighbours, even if they didn't know each other.

When The USA scored an empty net goal, making the score five to three for the USA with 45 seconds to go to the third period, the screening room went silent. Some people even began to leave. As we heard the arena siren confirming the USA's victory, we all left. Some fans were crushed, but some still believed that Canada would get a medal.

As a Canadian hockey fan, I also was deeply disappointed with the loss, but as a hockey fan, I think this was the best game in the Olympics so far!
