Since the start of the Games, the Skytrain has been the main form of transportation used by the public, including myself. I always get on at Brighthouse, the Richmond terminus, and get off at Waterfront, the downtown terminus. When the train reaches Bridgeport, a large crowd with Canadian shirts or flags comes in and fills almost every train car to capacity. Then, as we travel through Vancouver, it gets even more crowded with additional passengers. Many people end up waiting on the station platform for the next empty train. Yet, I don't see any passengers who look frustrated. On the contrary, I think they actually like this crowded atmosphere even though they have to remain standing for a long time. I’ve seen passengers chat with strangers about where they’d been or what they’d seen. Many people, lucky enough to have found an empty seat, give it up the minute they see a senior or a mother with children. At the stations downtown, volunteers, security guards and police are hard at work giving directions to the crowd pouring in and out of the stations. I often hear them shout: "more room over here!" or "come on, get in fast, doors close in 10 seconds!" |
