La Joie de Lire (the joy of reading) is both the title and the purpose of the French programs in at the Vancouver International Writers Festival. Three authors—Angèle Delaunois, Martine Noël-Maw, and Mélanie Watt—will present their works and speak with students about their books and their writing in five different events.

Mélanie Watt will present her books, and her illustrations, about Scaredy Squirrel, Leon the Chameleon, and Chester, the megalomaniac cat, to students in Kindergarten to grade 3 in two events: Mélanie and her friends on Tuesday, October 16, at 1 pm and again, Mélanie and her friends on Thursday, October 18, at 10am.

Angèle Delaunois and Martine Noël-Maw will jointly present a variety of books in three events, the first of which is Home and Community on Tuesday, October 16, at 10 am, for students in grades 4-7.  Note that Martine Noël-Maw’s Drôle de zèbre was written in collaboration with students at Ducharme School in Moose Jaw, SK.

In two other events on Wednesday, October 17, at 10 am and Sorcerers and Butterflies on Thursday, October 18 at 1pm, for students in grades 8-12. Angèle Delaunois and Martine Noël-Maw will explore courage, challenges, friendship and community through discussion of the award-winning The Little Yellow Bottle and Dans Le Pli des Collines, among other books.

Finally, please note that The Vancouver International Writers Festival has established a new pilot program, the Bus Subsidy Fund. The Fund is intended to provide local travel assistance to groups of students attending the Festival’s Spreading the Word and La Joie de Lire events, based on financial need. School groups attending the Festival can apply for a subsidy per student equivalent to single-direction transit fares required to travel to the Festival.  This fund is being introduced as a pilot program and will be assessed following the Festival. More information will be available on the Festival’s website in August.  Go to: www.writersfest.bc.ca
