French Immersion Celebration Week 2012

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) – BC & Yukon is pleased to announce that the week of February 5-11, 2012, will officially be recognized as French Immersion Celebration Week by both the Government of British Columbia and the Government of Yukon.

BC students have had the opportunity to be educated in French Immersion programs for over 30 years. Interest in French language programs continues to increase, a phenomenon reflected in enrolment statistics: 2011-2012 marks the fourteenth year of consecutive enrolment growth in BC French Immersion programs. In BC, over 238,000 students are enrolled in French Second Language programs and French Immersion alone represents nearly 8% of the province’s total student population.

Students have had the opportunity to be educated in French Immersion programs in Yukon for the past 30 years and have enjoyed considerable success. Since these programs were originally introduced, the educational needs of Yukon has evolved and French language programs now co-exist with other language programs, such as Yukon First Nations’ Languages and Spanish. However, even with the offer of additional language programs, French remains a very popular choice among Yukon families. Over the past decade, enrolment in French Immersion has increased to account for more than 600 students and currently represents nearly 12% of the total student population.

During this week of celebration, CPF members will be organizing events across the province. Students and their families are invited to celebrate and share their achievements in French Immersion programs. French Immersion Celebration Week aims for inclusion: the ability to speak French or being enrolled in immersion are not requirements to enjoy the celebrations!

The Branch is offering a $100 FI Celebration Week Volunteer appreciation grant to celebrate your Chapter volunteers. The volunteer appreciation event, initiative or gifts cannot include alcoholic beverages, tobacco or travel and must occur between February 1st and 29th.

Please submit your receipts to the Branch Office (Attn: Volunteer Appreciation) by February 29th in order to receive reimbursement. Pictures, descriptions and stories from your event are always welcome and may appear in the Newsletter!
