Fall Rocks!

It was wonderful to meet many of you at our AGM/National conference in Ottawa. The conference was a fantastic opportunity for CPF members from across Canada to connect, and I know I’m not the only one who left with fresh energy and knowledge to share with volunteers back home!

I’m looking forward to connecting with many more of you during our upcoming Bilingualism Rocks! tour. During the tour, I’ll be checking email whenever possible (oh for Wi-Fi in every hotel room). In case of emergencies, please call Executive Director, Robert Rothon, or Systems and Office Manager, Dimitry Morales

Happy November,

Persia Sayyari

Membership Drive 2010

THANK YOU for all the hard work you’ve put in to the membership drive this year! I’ve received many phone calls and emails from parents wanting to sign up and get more information about CPF in their communities. It’s clear you’ve been doing fantastic promotional work!

As of October 31st, our membership drive is closed. New or renewed memberships obtained during the drive will be counted towards individual and chapter prizes. More information about this year’s prizes can be found here.

For purposes of the membership drive calculations, membership forms must be post-marked October 31st so that our national office can process them by November 15th.   We will be calculating membership numbers and distributing prizes in December.

Remember – even though the membership drive is over, anyone can sign up for CPF at any time!  On-line registration is available here.

Socio-cultural Grants

Our Branch has received many outstanding grant applications for events to encourage French language and culture. We will be approving funds over the next two weeks and contacting all applicants by email in mid-November.

If there are additional funds left over after we have reviewed existing applications, we will re-open the registration process to chapters who missed the deadline.  Funds will be distributed within 30 days of receiving all receipts and completion of the online evaluation form.

If you have any questions, please contact Dimitry.

Scholarships and Cash Prizes offered by Video Contest for French Immersion Students

The Canadian Association of Immersion Teachers (ACPI-CAIT) has organized a contest for French Immersion secondary students (grades 9 – 12) enrolled full-time in public or private Canadian schools. Interested students should create a video clip in French on the theme: “Rapprochement of Cultures.”

UNESCO has declared 2010 the Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, and a culture of peace. Video clips will be judged primarily on how they express this theme. Students may take inspiration from questions such as: what is the “rapprochement of  cultures”? What form does it take in your life? How do you envision it? What values underlie it?

Clips must be at least 30 seconds long, but not longer than 90 seconds.  Submissions must be received by January 31, 2011, by email at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The University of Ottawa will offer a $20,000 scholarship to each of the top three candidates. If a winner is not old enough to attend university, the scholarship will be put in reserve for him/her for a period of 5 years. Cash prizes will also be offered to the top three candidates ($500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $150 for third place).  The University of Ottawa will also offer 15 scholarships of $ 2,000 to the 15 runners-up. Full contest rules and regulations are available (in French only) at: www.acpi.ca

Write an Essay and Win a Scholarship to a Leading Canadian University

Is your son or daughter looking for a unique and rewarding university experience? Why not study in a bilingual environment?  More than $200,000 in scholarships from four Canadian universities are available to be won through French for the Future’s National Essay Contest.   Students should write a 1,000-word French essay answering the question:

“Imagine that you have the authority to declare 2011 the International Year of ____________ (fill in the blank)!  What theme would you choose?  Why?”

Deadline: January 10, 2011

2010 October CRU Print E-mail

Welcome

Welcome, new CPF Chapter Representatives! We’re delighted that you’ve chosen to join fellow parents to support French learning opportunities in your communities and across British Columbia. This monthly Chapter Representative Update will keep you informed about our Branch activities and French language and cultural events.

This has been a busy month for many chapters as they re-group after summer vacation and begin planning for the school year. It has also been a very busy month for our office, as we prepare for the AGM, coordinate the upcoming Bilingualism Rocks! tour, and reach out to parents interested in French Second Language education.

An important note regarding our mailing list: currently, this Chapter Representative Update does not get distributed to all CPF members. Many chapter executives forward this message to their entire membership (which we encourage!), but we send it only to executive members and other active volunteers who have indicated they wish to receive it directly from our office. Usually, we send the CRU on “blind carbon copy”, but this time we have sent it separately to each chapter. Please take a moment to look at the message field and tell me if I should remove or add any names to your Chapter’s list of recipients.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with many of you in person and speaking with even more by phone or email. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Sincerely,

Persia Sayyari
Chapter Support & Community Outreach
