CPF East Van Chapter is on the look out for your un-wanted French books. We have two inner city schools and four inner city after school programs trying to build their French language libraries for their French Immersion children. The Schools are primarily looking for beginning books for the primary grades (K-4) and the after school programs are on the look out for anything.

The books will be looked at the school reps. For their libraries first and the remaining books will go to the after school programs.

CPF East Vancouver appreciates your generosity in supporting our inner city families.

Yours in French

Chetwynd Celebrates Carnival Print E-mail

Bonhomme chills in Chetwynd

By Liz Brown

Chetwynd Echo Reporter

Friday, February 17, 2012

CHETWYND – Chetwynd French immersion students celebrated the longstanding festivities of Quebec Winter Carnival this week.

Thousands visit Quebec City each year to participate in the couple weeks of activities.

On Monday Don Titus Elementary School re-created the event by turning their entire building into a carnival. Hallways were lined with eager participants ready to portage canoes over ramps and other obstacles, simulating the early voyageur’s experience. Another station, parents painted large, curly mustaches on the faces of all who were willing – parents and teachers included.

Liz Dobbs, a parent and substitute teacher helped with the event and while she admitted it was a lot of work, it was a fun and educational event.

“It gives them a sense of French culture we don’t necessarily get every day,” she said.

Dobbs said the kids were excited about the event and began requesting to play the role of the famous Bonhomme (snowman) in October.

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) president Michelle Albin introduced the quilting station this year. She says it’s a special year as they celebrate their first graduating class since the school opened seven years ago.

“I really wanted to do something to commemorate that we’re seven years that this French immersion program has been going.”

“A lot of people thought we wouldn’t be able to pull it off,” said Albin.

On the Carnival Event, 10 parents came to help – the most parent support they have ever had. Dobbs and Albin said the volunteers were greatly appreciated as Don Titus only has three full-time French immersion teachers.

6th Annual Marché français/French Marketplace 2011 Print E-mail

Mark your calendar for April 14, 2011.

Canadian Parents for French - New Westminster Chapter is preparing for the 6th Annual Marché français/French Marketplace. This year the marché takes place during BC Arts and Culture Week so why not come and experience a bit of French art and culture!  Meet vendors of hard-to-find French resources and interesting French-themed items. Early French Immersion students will be displaying some of their art as well.

With the recent closings of Vancouver's long standing multi language book store, Sophia's Books, and the largest source of music, games, CDs and DVDs, French Best-sellers, it is even harder to find local French resources. But we have sourced out several amazing businesses such as Kidsbooks, French Usborne Books, Savoir Books, Word Nerd Language and Education Ltd. and  L'École des Loisirs (offering quality book subscriptions from France) who are bringing tons of French books and other various stock for all ages.

This year we have some exciting new artists coming with photography from France, garden jewels and locally made French greeting cards. Van Dop Art Gallery is also coming and showcasing some French-Canadian artists. We have a few surprises too.

Listen to accordion folk dance music from France and Quebec performed by Marian Rose while enjoying delicious crêpes and maple treats. The Francophone Scouts will be hosting a children’s activity and craft area. French Immersion students will be conducting story time for the younger children.

We have a huge cross section of people attending -  French students, French Immersion classes, parents, teachers, librarians and the general public at large. We also have visitors attending from surrounding districts and last year, people from as far away as Abbotsford and Washington came.

Admission is free. Everyone is welcome!

À bientôt!

Special thanks go out to École Herbert Spencer School and SD40 for supporting this annual event.

Local chapter of Canadian Parents for French annual meeting June 9

June 8, 2010

Parents and students interested in French Immersion are invited to the Annual General Meeting for the Comox Valley chapter of Canadian Parents for French tomorrow.

Local French Immersion enrollment is set to reach more than 1,000 students in the next school year. Chapter co-president Haley Humphrey attributed the group's success to strong relationships with the Valley's French Immersion schools.

"With about 100 kindergarten students entering the French Immersion program each fall since a cap on enrolment was lifted in 2005, it's very clear that parents in the community value French Immersion as an educational option," she said.

Last year the group's Grade 8 and 9 students experienced a week of winter weather in Quebec, including a taste of Carnaval, before the Quebec students traveled to the Valley to experience a Vancouver Island spring. Efforts to support a 2011 trip to Paris and London for Grade 11 and 12 immersion students are ongoing.

Students can attend French Immersion at Ecole Robb Road in Comox and Ecole Puntledge Park in Courtenay. Late Immersion is also available for students going into Grade 6. Next year, Ecole Mark R. Isfeld will see its first French Immersion grads get their "double dogwood" diplomas. The AGM starts at 7 p.m. (Wednesday, June 9) at Ecole Mark R. Isfeld Secondary.

Canadian Parents for French--Golden Chapter Annual General Meeting Print E-mail

Hello CPF Golden members,

I would like to invite you all to attend our Annual General Meeting and Family Celebration to be held at Alexander Park Elementary School playground on Thursday, May 20 from 5 – 7 PM.

This is an important meeting, as we will be nominating people to our board and committees (but don’t let that stop you from coming! J ), and giving an update about the External review that the School Board has started on the English and French programming in Golden.

Anyone is invited and welcome to come to the AGM, but only members can make motions, vote, and be elected to the board.

This is also a celebration of our amazing French Immersion program, and as such we would like as many families as possible to attend. We will have some childminding available during the meeting, and some loosely organized activities for the kids. We would also like to have a Pot Luck, so bring something to share OR a little picnic dinner for you and your family. Please bring your own plates, drinks and utensils.

If it rains, we will hold the meeting from 5:30 – 6:30 in the APES library and we will hold the Celebration and Pot Luck at a later date.

The Pot Luck will start at 5 PM and the meeting will be from 5:30 – 6:30.

Please RSVP by May 17 if you will be able to come to the meeting and Pot Luck. Also, if you have any questions that you hope will be addressed at the AGM, please send them to me in advance.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,

Laurie Dalzell
