Call for Nominations to the Nominations Committee

Governing a national non-profit organization is an important job. Canadian Parents for French's board of directors is comprised of volunteers who care deeply about French-second-language education in Canada. These board members come from all walks of life and all regions of Canada, and it is the Nominations Committee that helps to select a well-rounded and functional board.

The nominations committee includes CPF staff and board members from both the national and provincial levels, and is currently looking for one representative from CPF's general membership. This representative will be selected through a nominations process, so any current member of CPF who would like to serve on the Committee is eligible to be nominated.

As a member of the Nominations Committee, your duties would include adopting the selection criteria for new Board members, reviewing their résumés and other documentation, contacting candidates' references, and participating in telephone interviews with each of the candidates. Duties also include preparing a final slate of nominees for presentation at the 2012 Annual General Meeting. This process will unfold mostly in June, but may extend later into the summer.

CPF members interested in serving on the Nominations Committee may nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else or by their branch. Nominations must include a current email address and telephone number for the nominee. Nominations should be sent by email to the committee chair, Annette Revet, at a.revet@cpf.ca, by the nomination deadline of January 15, 2012.

We look forward to hearing from interested CPF members!

Lisa Marie Perkins, President   president@cpf.ca

Greetings friends,

I hope this message finds you well as we all enter the holiday season, look back at our achievements of 2011 and plan for great things in the year ahead!

Last month, BC residents voted in their school trustee elections. As you may recall, our branch office circulated some resources through our Parents Are Voters campaign (www.parentsvote.ca) to help educate and engage your local School Trustee candidates. Now that the elections are over, we want to know what you thought about these resources: Did you use them?  Were they helpful?  What responses did you receive from your local candidates?

Please send me your answers in an email to comms@cpf.bc.ca. I’ll also be sending out a template letter of congratulations to the new and returning School Trustees which our office encourages you to fill out and send to your Trustees.

And speaking of congratulations – we extend ours to two long-standing CPF chapter volunteers Sheila Boehm of Williams Lake and Charlene Dobie of Surrey, both of whom were recently elected for the first time to School Trustee positions in their communities. This is another terrific example of CPF parents taking the next step to help make a positive difference in their communities. If you know of other CPF members who were successfully elected School Trustees, please let us know!

Keep in touch, Courtney Meegan

French will not be devalued in BC schools

We are pleased to announce that the BC Ministry of Education has reversed a controversial curriculum proposal which would have demoted the significance of French in BC’s public education system. We are grateful to our members, partners and others in the Francophone and Francophile community for their support and for joining forces to oppose the categorization of French – an Official Language of Canada and the second most spoken language in BC - as just another “additional language.”

Educacentre French courses for Parents – Courses begin February 2012

From Educacentre: “Does your child learn French at an immersion school or a francophone program? Would you like to accompany your child's studies and speak some French in your family, but your knowledge of French is too limited?

The French for Parents program offers courses specifically developed for parents. The courses allow you to learn French on topics relating to daily family life, school, etc.

Participants will gain a solid understanding of grammar basics, vocabulary and pronunciation. A friendly environment in a workshop setting provides numerous opportunities to practice your language skills. The method includes active situations of family activities, discussions between participants and with the teacher, role plays, and exercises of the study book.”

More information about levels and cost can be obtained at Educacentre’s website here: http://bit.ly/uCqMqA.

 What is membership all about?

The purpose of Canadian Parents for French is to support you and your child's French learning experience. We provide support to your child's teachers and to you as parents.

We provide information to families about French Immersion by hosting information meetings and posting informative articles about the programme. We also support the schools by bringing in extra-curricular activities specifically in French.

Please come to the website for updates on events that will be happening in your schools and in the district. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings. If you are not yet a member, please don't hesitate in becoming one.

Questions? Please don't hesitate to email us at: cpfnorthvan@gmail.com

Support your North Vancouver students now!

Our local chapter receives 80% of all membership fees for our operating funds. Membership rebate revenue gets redistributed locally to benefit North Van schools and individual students in the form of socio-cultural grants, school resource funding, individual grants to students participating in CPF student conferences and Quebec trips, and high school scholarships, etc.
While we work to support all schools delivering French language education in North Vancouver, your family needs to be a member of CPF in order to apply for individual benefits for students and to receive our regular communication.
