BC Students Take National Award
Press Release
Released: May 30, 2006
New Westminster - Silvana Lovera of Burnaby, Sebastien Picard of Victoria and Ilya Feige of Shawnigan Lake all won coveted $20,000 scholarships to the
University of Ottawa, and the top place prize at Canadian Parents for French’s national French-language public speaking competition in
Ottawa on the weekend. Min Je Woo of Burnaby took third place in the late immersion category.
The BC students competed in the Early and Late French
immersion, regular or Core French, and Francophone categories against provincial and territorial winners from across the country. Lovera came
first in the Core French, Picard in the Francophone, and Feige in the early immersion categories. All wrote and presented their speeches in French,
which for most was either a second or third language.
“BC's showing is absolutely tremendous, and a testament to the incredible commitment to French
being made by students, teachers, districts and parents across British Columbia,” stated Sherry Taylor, president of CPF’s BC & Yukon
Branch. BC has enjoyed record-breaking rates of growth in French immersion enrolment for the past six years.
More than 40,000 students from
the Yukon to Prince Edward Island competed in school, district, and provincial-level competitions before winners were sent on to Ottawa to the
annual Concours d’art oratoire. The competition was open to children studying French from grade six through 12, either as a subject
or through an immersion or Francophone program, and topics covered everything from existentialism to Marilyn Monroe. Only grade 12
provincial winners went on to compete in Ottawa
Canadian Parents for French-BC & Yukon Branch has organized Concours d’art oratoire for close to two decades. CPF is a
