"Only the Beginning" Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon
Celebrates BC French Immersion Record
Press Release
Released: January 7, 2005
BC has set a dramatic new record for French Immersion enrolment in 2004-05 with 35,519 students enrolled in the program in public schools across the Province. The new record represents the largest one-year increase in French Immersion numbers in almost two decades.
Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon is celebrating the growing popularity of French Second language education. The release of final numbers confirms CPF-BC & Yukon's estimates of last September. Significantly, it occurred in a time when overall school enrolment declined.

"The record popularity of French Immersion reflects both the significant grassroots efforts of CPF and our partners and the growing recognition of the value of second language learning. French Immersion students learn the BC curriculum in a second language which helps develop other creative and work skills," noted Sharon Taylor, President of Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon Branch.
"French Immersion enrolment is growing everywhere in BC. The fastest growing districts are in Quesnel, Burnaby and Salmon Arm. The largest per capita enrolment is in Campbell River. Vancouver, Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey and Victoria have the largest programs. And new programs are starting in communities such as 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Fernie and Cranbrook," added Taylor. (See below for selected School District enrolments.)
"This dramatic new record in enrolment underlines the need to create more French Immersion spaces in School Districts across BC and to recruit more teachers capable of teaching in multiple languages. We estimate that there will be more than 40,000 French Immersion students in BC by 2010 and we need to get ready for them," concluded Taylor.
